Dengue cases cross 60,000 as September sees sharp rise in infections

Bangladesh recorded 1,232 new dengue cases and two deaths in the 24 hours to Saturday morning, taking the country’s total infections this year to 60,379 and fatalities to 178, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Of the new patients, 177 were hospitalised in Barishal, 194 in Chattogram, 85 in Dhaka division, 175 in Dhaka South City Corporation and 154 in Dhaka North City Corporation areas.

Khulna reported 258 new admissions, while 54 were recorded in Mymensingh, 82 in Rajshahi, 47 in Rangpur and six in Sylhet.

The latest figures come as the dengue situation has become increasingly serious this year, with September emerging as a particularly concerning period for new infections and deaths.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman recently urged people to cooperate with the government’s three-month nationwide Dengue Prevention and Cleanliness Campaign, calling on households, educational institutions and workplaces to spend at least an hour each week cleaning their surroundings and eliminating stagnant water.

The Prime Minister stressed that preventing mosquito breeding remains the easiest way to reduce dengue transmission and urged young people, students, volunteers and community organisations to participate in the campaign.

The number of dengue cases recorded so far this year is already more than half of last year’s total. In 2025, dengue infected 102,861 people and claimed 413 lives, while 2024 saw 101,214 cases and 575 deaths.
