Lawmaker Gazi Nazrul's 19-year-old second wife found dead at NAM Bhaban

Mariam Khatun, the 19-year-old second wife of Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam, was found dead at the NAM Bhaban, a residential complex for lawmakers in Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, on Sunday evening.

Police found Mariam hanging from a ceiling fan inside Flat 203 on the third floor of Building No 5 after being alerted at around 7 pm.

Tejgaon Deputy Commissioner of Police Ibne Mizan confirmed the death to Daily Waadaa.

“We found the body of Gazi Nazrul Islam’s second wife hanging,” Mizan said.

The cause and circumstances of her death were not immediately known. Police also could not say when she died.

Mizan said Mariam’s parents had been informed and confirmed that she was 19.

Forensic personnel from the Criminal Investigation Department visited the flat to examine the scene. Police Bureau of Investigation personnel were also called, reported Prothom Alo newspaper.

The death comes two months after Mariam was drawn into a controversy involving Nazrul following the circulation on social media of footage showing the lawmaker with a young woman in a private setting.

Nazrul identified the woman as Mariam and said they had married on June 17 with the consent of his first wife. Mariam and her father also publicly said the marriage had taken place.

The episode nevertheless led to questions over the circumstances of the marriage. A biodata bearing Nazrul’s recommendation and dated five days after the claimed wedding listed Mariam as unmarried, while the marriage registrar whose name appeared on a subsequently circulated certificate said he had not been present at the ceremony.

Jamaat-e-Islami expelled Nazrul in July, citing allegations of “moral misconduct”, and subsequently sought action over his parliamentary status.

The Election Commission said it could act only after receiving a formal reference from Parliament. As of early September, no such reference had been received and Nazrul remained an MP.

Nazrul was elected to Parliament from Satkhira-4 on a Jamaat ticket in the February 2026 election.
