Suspects admit killing, Oprotim murder trial to be completed soon, Home Minister says

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Sunday expressed hope that the trial in the killing of 13-year-old Oprotim, son of a Comilla University teacher, would be completed within a short time.

“We hope that, like the trial in the Ramisa killing, we will be able to complete the trial of Oprotim’s killing within a short time,” he said at a press briefing.

According to the minister, the suspects had admitted to killing Ishayat Shahriar Oprotim, a seventh-grader and son of Comilla University teacher Dr Nahida Begum.

Police have arrested four suspects in connection with the killing, he said, adding that investigators had found evidence against them.

Salahuddin said the trial would be conducted through the court and that the government would provide necessary support to ensure the legal process proceeds smoothly and swiftly.

He also said the suspects were allegedly involved in other criminal activities.

The minister added that previous evidence suggested Oprotim had some connection with the group.

He praised the police for arresting the suspects within 12 hours of the killing.

Oprotim’s body was recovered from a hillock behind Magic Paradise Park on Saturday, around 22 hours after he went missing.

He left home around 3:30pm on Friday, telling his mother that he was going to Shalban Vihara with friends to take photographs. He was carrying his mother’s iPhone at the time, Nahida said in a Facebook post on Friday.
