Gazi Nazrul placed on 4-day remand again

A Dhaka court on Thursday placed Satkhira-4 MP and expelled Jamaat-e-Islami leader Gazi Nazrul Islam on a four-day remand again in a case filed over the alleged abetment to suicide of his second wife, Mariam Khatun.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ripon passed the order after DB Inspector Mohammad Salauddin produced Nazrul before the court following the completion of his previous four-day remand.

The DB inspector sought a seven-day remand for Nazrul.

Earlier on September 21, a Dhaka court placed Nazrul on a four-day remand in the case.

According to the remand petition, Nazrul and his first wife were placed on remand to investigate their suspected roles in allegedly instigating, provoking, pressuring, intimidating or otherwise inducing Mariam to commit suicide.

Mariam, 19, was found hanging at NAM Bhaban in the capital’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area on September 20.

Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Monir Hossain said police found her body hanging from a ceiling fan inside a room of Flat 203 on the third floor of Building 5 at NAM Bhaban.

Nazrul and his first wife were later taken into police custody for questioning.

Mariam’s father, Masum Billah, filed the case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station. Her maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman was also named as an accused.

Nazrul was elected MP from the Satkhira-4 constituency in the 13th parliamentary election on a Jamaat-e-Islami nomination.

In July, a video showing Nazrul in a private moment with a young woman circulated on social media. He later identified the woman as his second wife, Mariam.

Jamaat-e-Islami subsequently expelled Nazrul from the party.
