Cleaner injured by ‘accidental gunshot’ at Sylhet airport

A cleaner at the Sylhet Osmani International Airport was injured by a gunshot on Saturday morning allegedly fired by an Ansar member who was trying to drive birds away from the runway area.

The injured person was identified as Rubel Ahmed, a cleaner at the airport.

Airport sources said Ansar member Mujammel fired his gun in an attempt to drive away birds from the runway area in the morning. A bullet accidentally struck Rubel in the waist.

Following the incident, Rubel was taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for treatment.

Hafiz Ahmed, director of Sylhet Osmani International Airport, said the incident occurred unexpectedly.

“We are investigating the matter. If any negligence is found, legal action will be taken against the Ansar member,” he said.
