Govt’s focus on stronger implementation of maritime policy: PM

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today called for effective implementation of policies and operational excellence to transform Bangladesh’s maritime sector into a modern, safe, competitive and environmentally sustainable driver of national development.

“The current government is committed to transforming Bangladesh’s maritime sector into a modern, safe, competitive and environmentally sustainable driver of national development,” he said in a message on the occasion of World Maritime Day 2026.

The Head of the Government added: “Our focus is on stronger implementation, modern infrastructure, greener shipping, skilled seafarers and effective maritime governance.”

Bangladesh is observing World Maritime Day 2026 under the International Maritime Organization (IMO) theme, “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence”.

“The theme resonates strongly with our national vision: unlocking Bangladesh’s maritime potential requires not only sound policies and regulations, but also effective enforcement and operational excellence,” he said.

Referring to the BNP election manifesto, Tarique Rahman said the government had pledged to prioritise development of the blue economy through the science-based and sustainable use of marine resources, deep-sea fishing, eco-tourism and coastal industries.

The manifesto also proposed establishing a National Blue Economy Authority and projected significant employment opportunities from maritime initiatives, he said.

Highlighting Bangladesh’s strategic position in the Bay of Bengal, the Prime Minister said more than 90 percent of the country’s international trade is seaborne, while the seaports of Chattogram, Mongla and Payra, along with the extensive river network, facilitate the movement of essential goods and services.

He said Bangladesh has progressively strengthened its legal and institutional framework for maritime boundaries, shipping and port management since independence, while the country has acceded to 29 IMO maritime conventions.

The government is also prioritising the decarbonisation of domestic and ocean-going shipping and advancing a green transition across the shipping sector, the Prime Minister said.

Describing 2026 as the “Year of Implementation”, Tarique Tahman outlined four key priorities: advancing green shipping and developing world-class ship-recycling facilities; modernising port infrastructure through automated and digital logistics systems; protecting marine sovereignty and ecosystems through expanded hydrography and action against marine plastic pollution; and upgrading maritime training institutes to empower seafarers.

“Maritime excellence must be reflected in our everyday practice,” he said, urging port authorities, ship-owners, seafarers, maritime professionals and environmental agencies to work together to translate global standards and national priorities into tangible results.

The Premier called for collective efforts to harness Bangladesh’s maritime potential and build a stronger blue economy and a safer, greener and more prosperous future.
