Parliamentary body seeks BPC explanation on energy crisis resolution by only price hike

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Undertakings has sought an explanation from the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) as to how the country’s fuel crisis ended merely after fuel prices were raised, despite no change in the supply system after the incumbent government assumed office.

The explanation was sought at the first meeting of the committee held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Tuesday.

The committee also recommended that the BPC provide detailed information at its next meeting on the country’s fuel demand, storage capacity and its preparedness to meet future demand, according to a press release issued by the Parliament Secretariat.

The committee recommended that the relevant authorities formulate and present a timely and realistic plan to keep fuel prices at an affordable level for the people.

Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni, chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Undertakings, presided over the meeting.

Committee members whip Miah Nuruddin Ahmad Apu, whip Md Akhtaruzzaman Mia, Tahsina Rushdir, Khondoker Abu Ashfaque, Mohamed Koysor Ahmed, Biswas Jahangir Alam, Mustafizur Rahman Bhuiyan and Muhammad Nazibur Rahman attended the meeting.

The secretary in charge of the Energy and Mineral Resources Division, officials from the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation, representatives from the Parliament Secretariat, relevant ministries, divisions and organisations were present.
