‘Visionary, confident and guiding’: President hails PM’s UNGA address in first Bangabhaban meeting

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman paid a courtesy call on President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday, marking their first meeting at Bangabhaban since the president assumed office.

The Prime Minister arrived at Bangabhaban in the afternoon, where the President received him. They were also accompanied by senior officials of the President’s Office, including the military secretary, secretary and press secretary.

During the meeting, Tarique briefed Fakhrul on his recent visit to the United States, including his participation in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

He also informed the President about his meetings on the sidelines of the UNGA with heads of state and government from various countries, the UN secretary-general and senior UN officials, as well as senior representatives of international economic and development organisations.

The President then congratulated him on his address to the UN General Assembly, describing it as “visionary, confident and guiding”.

He said the speech reflected Bangladesh’s national interests and the hopes and aspirations of its people, while clearly presenting the country’s position on important global issues.

The President also said the US visit had played an important role in further consolidating and strengthening Bangladesh’s position internationally and protecting public interests.

He said the visit also made a significant contribution to expanding and strengthening bilateral and multilateral relations.

The two also discussed various issues concerning national and state interests.

The President thanked the Prime Minister for visiting Bangabhaban.

Tarique travelled to New York on September 21 to attend the UN General Assembly session. On Thursday (September 24), he delivered his speech at the UN General Assembly, speaking in favour of the interests of Bangladesh and its people and expressing the aspiration for a peaceful global community.

He returned home on Sunday (September 27) after completing his participation in the UN General Assembly session.
