A court on Thursday placed Obaidur Rahman, maternal uncle of deceased Mariam Khatun, on a four-day remand in a case filed over allegations of abetting the 19-year-old to commit suicide.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain passed the order after police produced Obaidur before the court and sought a five-day remand.

Different courts have so far placed prime accused and Satkhira-4 lawmaker Gazi Mohammad Nazrul Islam on remand twice, while his first wife Maksuda Islam was placed on one-day remand in the case.

Police recovered Mariam’s body hanging from a ceiling fan inside Flat No. 203 on the third floor of Building No. 5 of NAM Bhaban on the evening of September 20. The lawmaker and his first wife were taken into custody afterwards.

Mariam’s father, SM Masum Billah, filed the case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station on Thursday morning against Gazi, Maksuda Islam and Obaidur, alleging that they abetted Mariam’s suicide.

According to the case documents, Mariam married Nazrul in June 2026 under the “direct instigation” of Obaidur. She had been living with Nazrul and Maksuda at Flat No. 203 of Building No. 5 of NAM Bhaban, opposite the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

The case documents also say Mariam had told her family that Nazrul and Maksuda had been physically and mentally torturing her over various issues since the marriage.
