Youth should be aware to prevent misinformation: State Minister
State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yasser Khan Choudhury today urged the youths to be aware and play a responsible role to prevent the misinformation and disinformation, saying that the spread of these two bad elements through social media has emerged as an “ominous sign”.
“Misinformation and false information on social media have emerged as an ‘ominous sign’, and it is crucial for young people to play an cautious and responsible role to encounter them,” he said.
The state minister said this while addressing the closing ceremony of Second National Media Carnival 2026 as the chief guest at Notre Dame College in the capital, said a press release.
The state minister said the student community of Bangladesh has always played a pioneering role in nation-building. Their role in 2024 student-people’s movement will also be written in golden letters in history, he added.
Yasser said distinguishing between truth and falsehood has become a major challenge in the current era of information flow. It is very important for students to acquire media literacy and responsible communication skills, he added.
Recalling his days at Notre Dame College as a student, the state minister said he had visited the institution earlier with his friends and many memories of that time are still etched in his mind.
“Coming to this campus has brought back many old memories,” he said.
Yasser expressed hope that if such media carnivals are organised regularly in the future, students will make further progress in practising creativity, analytical skills and responsible citizenship.
He said the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is working continuously on these issues under the directives of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Noting that the Prime Minister is very interested in young people, the state minister said the government’s support for such initiatives would continue in the future.
Principal of Notre Dame College Dr Father Hemanto Pius Rozario, Father Anthony Gomes Rozario, Moderator of Notre Dame Media and Communication Club Shapla Banik, Chairman of ‘The Bangladesh Dialogue’ Rubayat Mannan Rafi, NCC Bank Vice President and Head of Financial Division Anisur Rahman Majumder, CEO of China Education Bangladesh Sazzad Hossain, and Simran Rahman of the Brand and Communication Department of the University of Scholars were present at the event.
Students from different educational institutions across the country participated in the carnival, organised by the Notre Dame Media and Communication Club on October 2 and 3.
The Media Carnival is serving as a platform for students to develop their skills in media, communication, research and creativity.
