‘Not for the faint-hearted’: UK MP Rupa Huq on what she saw at July Museum
UK Labour Party MP Rupa Huq visited the July Mass Uprising Memorial Museum in Dhaka on Sunday, touring exhibits documenting the July Mass Uprising, repression under the previous Awami League government and the movement’s martyrs.
During her visit, Huq viewed documents, photographs, personal belongings of martyrs and documentaries displayed across the museum’s galleries. She became visibly emotional while viewing the exhibits and described the accounts as deeply significant and painful.
Huq said many people around the world remain unaware of the full extent of the alleged human rights violations and repression during the previous Awami League government.
She stressed the importance of presenting these events accurately to the international community, particularly within diplomatic circles.
Huq also sought detailed information about the July Mass Uprising in her ancestral district of Pabna, including the circumstances surrounding those who were killed during the movement.
Before leaving, she signed the museum’s visitors’ book and wrote: “A fascinating exploration of recent history with lessons for the future. Not for the faint hearted.”
Huq later held a courtesy meeting with Ehasan Mahamud, director general of the July Museum, where they discussed the museum’s current operations and future plans.
She assured the museum authorities that she would extend all possible support for its development and activities from her position.
Given the historical significance of the mass uprising, Huq also recommended that the museum remain open to all citizens free of charge.
