A court has sent a young man to jail in Moulvibazar after police arrested him over allegations of making “derogatory remarks” about Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in a TikTok video.

The man, identified as Md Mamun, was detained during a police raid at his home in Shahapur village of Giasnagar Union in Moulvibazar Sadar upazila around 11pm on Saturday.

He was produced before a court on Sunday, which ordered that he be sent to jail.

Mamun is the son of Nizam Mia and a resident of the same area.

Moulvibazar Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saiful Islam confirmed the matter to Daily Waadaa on Sunday.

According to police, Mamun allegedly made a video in which he used "abusive and obscene" language against the prime minister and posted it on his TikTok account. The video later circulated on social media, drawing widespread criticism, police said.

Police also said a written complaint had previously been filed against Mamun at the police station.

Saiful Islam said Mamun had previously faced a political case and alleged that he was associated with the “fascists.”

“He had a previous political case against him. He has now made derogatory remarks about the prime minister. He was sent to court today in the case, and the court ordered that he be sent to jail,” the OC said.
