ICT prosecution appeals seeking death sentence for Inu

The prosecution of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Monday appealed to the Appellate Division, seeking the death penalty for former minister Hasanul Haque Inu, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison for crimes against humanity committed during the 2024 July Uprising.

Confirming the matter to newsmen, prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim said an appeal was filed with the concerned wing of the Appellate Division this morning.

The prosecution is scheduled to hold a press briefing in this connection later in the day.

The ICT-2 on June 30, 2026, convicted and sentenced former Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu to 10 years' imprisonment for crimes against humanity committed in connection with the killings of six people in Kushtia during the July-August 2024 Mass Uprising.

The second tribunal sentenced Inu to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment under charge No. 3, 10 years' imprisonment and a fine of Taka one lakh under charge No. 6, with the fine to be paid to the victims as compensation, and another 10 years' imprisonment and a fine of Taka one lakh under charge No. 7.

The sentences, however, shall run concurrently, meaning the convict will have to serve a total of 10 years in prison, the verdict said.
