A dua mahfil in remembrance of prominent businessman Mohammad Ghaziul Haque, chairman of MGH Group and a founding director and former chairman of Eastern Bank PLC, will be held in Dhaka on Friday, October 9.

The programme will be held at Baridhara Jame Masjid after Asr prayers, at around 4:30pm, according to an invitation issued by his family.

Family members have invited relatives, friends, colleagues and well-wishers to attend the gathering and pray for his forgiveness and eternal peace.

Ghaziul died at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka on Monday, October 5, at the age of 92. His namaz-e-janaza was held after Maghrib prayers at Gulshan Central Azad Mosque the same day, before he was laid to rest at Banani Graveyard.

Born in 1934, Ghaziul was a veteran figure in Bangladesh's business, shipping and banking sectors.

He began his professional career with British company Bird & Co Ltd in 1955 and rose to become managing director in 1976, when the company became Birds Bangladesh Limited. He later moved into entrepreneurship and joined Chattogram-based shipping company Aquamarine Ltd as a partner in 1980.

A decade later, Ghaziul and his partner formed Maersk Bangladesh Ltd as a joint venture with global shipping company Maersk Line. He served as chairman of the venture until 1997.

Ghaziul was also closely associated with Eastern Bank. He joined its board in 1993 and went on to serve two terms as chairman, from 2000 to 2006 and again from 2013 to 2018.

He was chairman of MGH Group, a Singapore-headquartered multinational conglomerate operating in more than 26 countries, with interests spanning logistics, aviation services, shipping, tea and rubber plantations, food and beverage, media and banking.

He is survived by his wife, Sultana Haque; son Anis Ahmed, the incumbent chairman of Eastern Bank; daughter Anila Haque; and other relatives and well-wishers.
