A 2.2-kilometre cycle track has been inaugurated on Airport Road in Chattogram on Friday, with the city corporation describing it as the country's first dedicated cycling track.

The initiative aims to ease traffic congestion and promote environment-friendly transport, with plans to develop more cycling facilities across the port city.

Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury inaugurated the track in the presence of Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain and local MP Abu Sufian.

The track was built under the city corporation's “Chattogram Airport Road Expansion and Other Physical Infrastructure Development” project. The four-lane road connects Shah Amanat International Airport to the elevated expressway.

Footpaths run along both sides of the road, while a central median with kerbstones separates the carriageways. The cycle track runs alongside a landscaped walkway on one side.

Mayor Shahadat said the dedicated lane is expected to improve cyclists' safety, expand opportunities for environmentally friendly travel and encourage residents to adopt healthier, more active lifestyles.

The initiative also aims to provide safer and more comfortable transport options for residents and tourists while improving the city's urban landscape, according to the city corporation.

After the inauguration, the finance minister, mayor, local lawmaker and other guests rode bicycles along the new track.
