Govt making strides to ensure medical services for all: Chief Whip

Jatiya Sangsad Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni today said the government is working to address the existing challenges in the health sector and ensure access to medical services for all.

He made these remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the 8th National Conference and Annual General Meeting 2026 of the Bangladesh Thyroid Society (BTS) at a city hotel, said a press release.

Moni said the previous government had caused extensive damage across various sectors of the country.

To restructure the health sector, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, with the advice and support of Dr. Zubaida Rahman, had nearly doubled the budget allocation for the sector, he added.

Emphasizing the importance of raising public awareness and promoting research on thyroid diseases, the chief whip said the thyroid gland plays a vital role in human growth, intellectual development, and the regulation of various bodily functions.

He stressed that, alongside medical professionals, all relevant stakeholders must come forward to prevent thyroid diseases, ensure early diagnosis, and provide advanced treatment.

Prof Dr AKM Fazlul Bari, President of the Bangladesh Thyroid Society and Director of the National Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (NINMAS) chaired the event.

Professor Dr. Harun Al Rashid, President of the Doctors Association of Bangladesh; Professor Dr. M. A. Karim, Chief Adviser to the Bangladesh Thyroid Society; and Professor Dr. A. K. Azad Khan, President of the Diabetic Association of Bangladesh, Professor Dr. Nasrin Sultana, Secretary-General of the Society and Professor Fouzia Moslem, the founding president of the Society, were also present.

The day-long conference featured scientific discussions on modern methods of diagnosing and treating thyroid diseases, thyroid cancer, thyroid disorders during pregnancy, iodine deficiency disorders, and the relationship between thyroid diseases and cardiovascular health.

A total of 12 oral research papers and 10 posters were presented at the conference.
