Dhaka University to hold 54th convocation on January 26
The University of Dhaka (DU) will hold its 54th convocation on January 26, 2027, with applications opening on November 1, the university announced on Sunday.
Professor Dr Atsushi Sunami, president of Japan’s Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF), will deliver the convocation address and receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree.
Professor Dr Muhammad Harunur Rashid, a major donor to a university trust fund, will also be awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree.
According to a statement from DU’s Public Relations Office, the announcement was made at a meeting on convocation preparations held at the auditorium of the Nawab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building. Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr A B M Obaidul Islam chaired the meeting.
President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will preside over the ceremony, while Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will attend as the guest of honour, the statement said.
Applications to attend the convocation will be accepted from November 1 to November 30. Graduates who passed their examinations, as well as medal recipients whose results were published between November 20, 2022, and November 30, 2026, will be eligible to apply.
The meeting also formed an executive committee, a management committee and several subcommittees to oversee preparations for the event.
The vice-chancellor urged the committees to begin work promptly and called for cooperation from all concerned to ensure the successful completion of the ceremony.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr Abdus Salam, Treasurer Professor Dr M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Senate members and lawmakers Md Amanullah Aman, Khairul Kabir Khokon and AKM Fazlul Haque Milon attended the meeting. Deans, residential hall provosts, department chairpersons, institute directors and heads of university offices were also present.
The vice-chancellor also stressed the need for collective efforts to strengthen education and research, maintain a conducive academic environment and enhance the university’s international reputation.
