Moyeen Khan seeks UAE help for Cox’s Bazar desalination project

Updated on:

Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Abdul Moyeen Khan has proposed a joint desalination project with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Cox’s Bazar to convert saline water into safe drinking water.

Moyeen made the proposal during a meeting with UAE Ambassador Abdulla Ali Khaseif Abdulla Alhmoudi at the Secretariat in Dhaka on Tuesday.

The minister warned that Bangladesh’s heavy dependence on groundwater could threaten long-term water security.

He sought UAE technical and financial cooperation for a pilot desalination plant in Cox’s Bazar, which could help reduce reliance on underground water sources.

Moyeen also called for greater Emirati investment in Bangladesh, proposing flexible payment arrangements for major projects.

He said Bangladesh faces difficulties making large upfront payments and suggested allowing foreign investors to recover their investments through installments.

The UAE ambassador, meanwhile, highlighted the contribution of Bangladeshi workers to the Gulf nation's economy and stressed the growing demand for skilled workers.

He urged Bangladesh to expand its supply of skilled manpower to the Emirati labor market.

The ambassador also requested a reduction in import taxes on high-quality limestone from the UAE to encourage greater trade.

Moyeen assured him that the proposal would be forwarded to the relevant authorities.

Earlier in the meeting, the minister briefed the ambassador on Bangladesh’s democratic transition and its associated challenges.

Senior officials from the ministry and the UAE Embassy, including embassy economic analyst Shahmina Isha Mannan, attended the meeting.
