Court orders seizure of assets belonging to former DMP commissioner Golam Faruq, his wife
A court has ordered the seizure of immovable properties and the freezing of bank accounts held in the names of Khandaker Golam Faruq, former commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and retired additional inspector general of police, and his wife, Sharmin Akter Khan.
Acting Judge Ayesha Akter Mousumi of the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Court issued the order on Wednesday following an application filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The ACC application stated that there was a risk that the properties could be transferred, converted or sold to conceal them while the inquiry or investigation was ongoing.
Therefore, to ensure that legal measures could subsequently be taken and to protect the interests of the state, it was necessary to seize the accused persons’ immovable properties and freeze their bank accounts.
The court ordered the seizure of immovable properties worth 1.33 crore taka in Faruq’s name and the freezing of movable assets worth 1.35 crore taka held in five bank accounts.
Additionally, it ordered the seizure of immovable properties worth 1.51 crore taka jointly owned by Faruq and his wife, along with the freezing of movable assets worth 12.02 lakh taka held in two bank accounts.
The ACC has been probing allegations that the former DMP chief and his wife amassed illegal wealth worth 3,000 crore taka and laundered money abroad. A travel ban was imposed on the couple in 2025.
What the ACC investigation found
According to ACC sources, the commission launched an inquiry following allegations that Faruq and Sharmin had acquired substantial assets beyond their known sources of income.
A review of collected records and income tax documents revealed significant discrepancies in their assets.
According to income tax records, the total value of Faruq’s accumulated assets, including his net assets and family expenses, amounted to 4.13 crore taka. However, his declared income totalled 2.85 crore taka.
Sharmin, a homemaker, had assets worth 3.30 crore taka, but her declared income stood at 24 lakh taka.
