Residents welcome rejection of mosquito coil factory in Sonargaon

Updated on:

Residents of Nayapur in Sonargaon, Narayanganj, have welcomed a ministry decision rejecting an application by Sharmin Chemical Works to establish a mosquito coil factory in the residential area, calling it a major victory in their campaign to protect the environment.

Journalist Shahnaz Munni shared the information on Wednesday, October 14.

On August 4, residents held a press conference protesting the proposed factory near Prashanti Bari, citing concerns over its potential environmental impact.

The ministry rejected the factory proposal following a formal appeal hearing on August 20, during which both sides were given the opportunity to present their arguments.

After reviewing the submissions and relevant legal provisions, the ministry rejected the company's application for environmental clearance.

Residents said the decision would protect the neighbourhood from potential air and noise pollution and prevent similar industrial projects from being established in the residential area.

They also expressed gratitude to those who supported their campaign against the proposed factory.
