UNGA President calls for stronger multilateral cooperation, meaningful action

Updated on:

President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Khalilur Rahman has called for stronger multilateral cooperation, responsible use of technology and a renewed focus on meaningful action as the General Assembly’s six Main Committees begin work during its 81st session.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, he said the UN’s work on peace and security, sustainable development, human rights and international law must translate commitments into tangible differences in people’s lives.

“Our shared goal is clear: A UN that restores trust, delivers results and puts people first,” he said.

Khalilur said he had made the call while opening the work of the six Main Committees during the current session of the General Assembly.

In another post, he wrote, “We cannot prevent every extreme weather event. But we can do far more to prevent disasters from becoming catastrophes.

“Ahead of COP31 in Antalya, I convened ‘A Planet Fit for the Future: Restoring Trust through Climate Action,’ bringing together Member States, representatives of the COP Presidencies, experts and civil society leaders.”

From making climate finance more accessible to ensuring early warnings reach communities in time, he said, “Our discussions focused on turning climate commitments into practical measures that protect people.”

“We have the science, technology and international agreements to make progress. What we need now is the political will to put them to work. That is how we build a planet fit for the future,” said the UNGA president.
