Ex-minister Dipu Moni sent to jail after two-day remand in Badda murder case
A Dhaka court on Friday sent former Social Welfare Minister Dr Dipu Moni to jail after the completion of her two-day remand in a murder case over the killing of auto-rickshaw driver Hafizul Shikder in the capital’s Badda area during the anti-discrimination student movement.
Investigation Officer and Sub-Inspector Riduanul Haque of Badda Police Station produced Dipu Moni before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court after the remand and sought an order to keep her in jail until the investigation is completed.
Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan ordered her to be sent to jail following a hearing.
Sub-Inspector Kamal Hossain, an official of the court’s General Registration Section attached to Badda Police Station, told that Metropolitan Magistrate GM Farhan Ishtiaq had granted two days of remand for Dipu Moni in the case on February 3, 2025.
However, the investigating officer could not execute the remand order at the time because Dipu Moni had to appear before courts in other cases, including one before the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), he said.
“In October this year, the investigating officer applied to execute the remand order. The court subsequently directed that the remand be executed within 15 working days,” Kamal added.
Following the court’s order, Dipu Moni was taken into remand on Wednesday for questioning.
According to the case statement, auto-rickshaw driver Hafizul Shikder took part in the anti-discrimination student movement in Badda on July 20, 2024. He was allegedly shot dead at the scene by the accused at around 3pm that day.
Hafizul’s father, Abu Bakkar Shikder, filed the murder case with Badda Police Station on August 21, 2024.
