DYF condemns arrest of injured former activist at Chattogram hospital

Updated on:

Democratic Youth Forum (DYF) President Jiko Tripura on Wednesday condemned the arrest of former organisation activist Sabiran Chakma, 37, while he was receiving treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital, claiming that no criminal case had been filed against him.

Jiko demanded Sabiran’s immediate release and proper medical treatment.

In a statement to the media, Jiko said members of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) and police arrested Sabiran from bed No. 59 in Ward 26 of the hospital at around 2pm on Monday.

“He is now being kept in the hospital’s prison ward without treatment. He was admitted to the hospital on October 22 with gunshot injuries,” the DYF president said.

Sabiran, a resident of Latiban in Panchhari upazila of Khagrachhari district, was shot by unidentified assailants while working, Jiko said.

Alleging that a group was conspiring to implicate Sabiran in an old case despite his not being involved in any criminal activity, Jiko said police from Panchhari Police Station investigated the matter on October 24 and found no criminal case against him.

“Despite this, we have learned that a conspiracy is underway to file a case against him,” he said.

Jiko warned that filing a case against Sabiran under such circumstances, despite the absence of any previous criminal case against him, would be a grave injustice, inhumane and contrary to the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution and the country’s laws.

He urged the relevant government authorities to refrain from such actions.
