‘Father, come save me’: Woman's final plea before death amid alleged abuse; husband arrested
A murder case has been filed over the death of 24-year-old Jumratun Nesa Barsha, with law enforcers arresting her husband, Nabid Hossain.
Tejgaon Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Muniruzzaman confirmed the matter to Daily Waadaa on Thursday, saying, “Nabid had beaten Barsha at various times over demands for dowry. There are clear marks of injuries on the deceased’s body. Barsha’s father filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, and the accused, Nabid, was arrested at the hospital.”
He said a post-mortem report would help establish the actual cause of death.
Barsha was a first-year undergraduate student at Tejgaon College in the capital.
Her father, Sheikh Monowar Hossain, runs a land trading business, and the family lives in their own flat in Lalbagh.
Her husband, Nabid Hossain, also lived in the same area.
According to family members, Barsha met Nabid after enrolling at Tejgaon College in the 2024–25 academic year, following her higher secondary examinations.
The two decided to marry, although Barsha’s family initially expressed reservations.
The couple completed their kabin in a private ceremony attended by both families on October 7, 2025. A grand wedding reception and other formalities were scheduled for December this year or January next year.
Speaking to reporters after news of Barsha’s death broke, her mother, Hasina Akter, said, “Just a few days after the wedding, Nabid stopped my daughter from continuing her studies. He also frequently took money from my husband on various pretexts, claiming it was for his business.”
According to the family, Nabid had physically and mentally abused Barsha at various times since their marriage over demands for dowry.
Barsha was also brutally beaten around midnight last Tuesday, they alleged.
At midnight on Wednesday, Barsha called her father and pleaded, “Father, come and save me.”
Just 15 to 20 minutes later, when her parents reached their daughter’s in-laws’ home, Nabid’s family claimed that Barsha had “died by suicide”.
She was subsequently taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in the capital, where the attending physician declared her dead.
Her family subsequently called the police and handed Nabid over to them.
