UNB Executive Editor attends WEF Asia Chapter meeting in Singapore
Nahar Khan, Executive Editor and Solis founder of United News of Bangladesh (UNB) attended the World Editors Forum (WEF) Asia Chapter meeting organised by the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) in Singapore.
Held recently at Conrad Orchard, the meeting brought together editors, media executives and journalism professionals from across the Asia-Pacific region to discuss key challenges facing newsrooms and the future of journalism.
The meeting was chaired by Esther Ng, chief content officer of Malaysia's Star Media Group, with Cherilyn Ireton, executive director of the World Editors Forum, UK, serving as co-chair.
Discussions focused on strengthening public trust in journalism, countering the spread of unverified information, improving newsroom planning and resource allocation, and addressing emerging challenges facing media organisations.
Adriaan Basson, editor-in-chief of South Africa's News24, delivered a presentation on his organisation's efforts to build public trust and the challenges it faces.
Participants also exchanged views on how newsrooms should respond to viral but unverified stories, emphasising responsible reporting and effective responses to misinformation.
The meeting also considered potential questions for the next State of the Asian Newsroom Report, particularly on newsroom planning, staffing and resource allocation.
Another key agenda item was the proposed formation of a core group for the WEF Asia Chapter to advise WAN-IFRA on the chapter's activities and coordinate regional responses to various programmes.
The proposed group is expected to meet up to four times a year, mostly online. Participants also discussed the meeting schedule for 2027.
Editors and media representatives from Bangladesh, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong, India, South Africa and the United Kingdom attended the meeting.
The World Editors Forum Asia Chapter is a network of editors from the Asia-Pacific region that advises WAN-IFRA on newsroom and journalism-related activities.
