Workers clash with police again on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway
Workers clashed with police again on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Gazipur on Wednesday morning, disrupting traffic after they blocked the road in protest.
The clash took place around 9:30am in the Signboard area under Gachha police station, when 2,000 to 4,000 workers gathered on the highway, Gazipur Industrial Police Superintendent Mohammad Amzad Hossain said.
Workers threw bricks and stones at law enforcement personnel when they arrived at the scene. Police responded by firing tear gas shells and sound grenades to disperse them.
The workers and police also engaged in chases and counter-chases before the situation was brought under control, Amzad said.
He added that workers had also gathered towards Joydebpur around 8:30am but were later dispersed.
The situation remained normal in Salna, Rajendrapur, Shafipur and Palli Bidyut areas, while some tension persisted in Kashimpur, where police remained on alert, the police superintendent said.
