Two DGFI personnel dismissed, jailed for a year over extortion allegations

Updated on:

Two members of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) have been dismissed from service and sentenced to one year in prison each after being found guilty by a court-martial over allegations of assaulting a motorcycle businessman and extorting money.

The two army personnel, identified as Sergeant Al Mamun and Soldier Nuruzzaman, were arrested by law enforcement agencies following allegations that they had beaten up the businessman and forcibly taken money from him in the early hours of October 25.

A source in the security forces confirmed the development to Daily Waadaa on Thursday, saying the two were found guilty in the court-martial proceedings and subsequently dismissed from service.

They have also been sentenced to one year in prison each and sent to a civilian jail, the source said.

Earlier, on October 25, Mohammadpur police arrested six people, including the two DGFI personnel, over allegations of abducting Mohammad Sharif, a motorcycle businessman in the capital's Shyamoli area, and demanding 10 lakh taka in extortion money.

Sharif filed a case with Mohammadpur Police Station in connection with the incident.

The other accused in the case are Ansar member Sohel Rana and private security guards Mukul Gazi, Mahfuzur Rahman and Ziaul Islam.

Following their arrest, a court ordered all six accused to be sent to jail. Subsequently, a court granted a petition seeking custody of the two DGFI personnel by the military authorities.
