Govt appoints new MDs to Janata, Agrani, BASIC banks; Sonali MD reinstated

Updated on:

The government has appointed new managing directors to Janata, Agrani and BASIC banks and reinstated Shawkat Ali Khan as managing director and chief executive officer of Sonali Bank.

The notifications were issued by the Financial Institutions Division (FID) of the Ministry of Finance on Monday and signed by Deputy Secretary Afroza Akter Riba, who confirmed the developments to Daily Waadaa.

Md Mahbub Alam, former additional managing director and chief risk officer of private-sector Southeast Bank, has been appointed managing director and chief executive officer of state-owned Janata Bank for three years from the date of his joining.

Noor Mohammed, former deputy managing director of Jamuna Bank, has been appointed managing director of Agrani Bank for a three-year term, while Md Nurul Huda, former deputy managing director of Janata Bank, has been appointed managing director of BASIC Bank for the same period.

In a separate notification, the government withdrew its earlier order cancelling Shawkat Ali Khan’s appointment as managing director and chief executive officer of Sonali Bank. Appointed in October 2024, he will remain in the position until the completion of his three-year tenure.

The latest decisions follow a series of changes in the leadership of state-owned banks. Last week, the government decided to cancel the remaining tenures of the contractual appointments of the managing directors and chief executive officers of Sonali, Janata and Rupali banks.

In September, the government also cancelled the appointments of the managing directors of Agrani Bank, Bangladesh Development Bank Limited and BASIC Bank.
