Anwar Khan Hospital properties up for auction over Tk 78 crore in unpaid loans
Properties linked to Anwar Khan Modern Medical College Hospital are set to be auctioned as Uttara Finance and Investments Limited seeks to recover more than 78 crore taka in unpaid loans.
The move adds to mounting financial pressure on Anwar Hossain Khan, a former Awami League lawmaker from Lakshmipur-1 who controls the hospital.
His business group has accumulated more than 3,464 crore taka in loans from banks and non-bank financial institutions. Almost all have become non-performing, according to banking records.
Uttara Finance's auction follows a similar move by Bank Asia.
The bank has issued an auction notice for mortgaged properties linked to the hospital in Dhanmondi. It is seeking to recover more than 24 crore taka in defaulted loans.
Together, the two lenders are pursuing recovery of more than 102 crore taka.
According to Uttara Finance's auction notice, issued under the Money Loan Court Act, 2003, the outstanding dues were calculated as of July 7, 2026.
The borrowers include Anwar Khan Modern Hospitals Limited and related parties.
The mortgaged assets comprise 8.25 decimals of land in Donia, Jatrabari, and another 5.28 decimals in Purana Paltan.
The properties cover a combined 13.53 decimals.
Interested buyers must submit bids by November 4. The tenders are scheduled to be opened on November 8.
The auction notice names Anwar Hossain Khan, managing director of the hospital, and his wife Tahmin Afroz, a director of the healthcare group, as personal guarantors.
Modern Diagnostic Center Limited is listed as a corporate guarantor.
More than 3,464 crore taka in loans
Banking records show that Khan's business group owes more than 3,464 crore taka to several financial institutions.
EXIM Bank has the largest exposure, with unpaid loans exceeding 950 crore taka.
Islami Bank Bangladesh follows, with nearly 600 crore taka in outstanding loans.
Other lenders include Jamuna Bank, National Bank, Social Islami Bank, AB Bank and Shahjalal Islami Bank, alongside Bank Asia and Uttara Finance.
Most of these loans have become non-performing, according to the records.
Khan expanded his healthcare and other businesses during the Awami League's tenure.
He also held influential positions in the banking sector, including the chairmanship of Shahjalal Islami Bank.
He subsequently lost his position on the bank's board after being classified as a loan defaulter.
The latest auction notices mark a further escalation in lenders' efforts to recover outstanding loans from his business interests.
