BCB doubtful over India series, reports Cricbuzz

Bangladesh’s scheduled white-ball series against India in September is in serious doubt amid renewed political tensions between the two countries, according to a report by Cricbuzz.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had hoped to host India despite strained relations, but the situation deteriorated after ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina addressed a virtual press conference from Delhi on August 5.

Bangladesh Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said India could not seek friendly relations while allowing Hasina to make statements from Delhi that undermine Bangladesh’s democracy and create instability.

Cricbuzz reported that BCB insiders consider the development the “final nail in the coffin” for hosting India, despite the board’s efforts to revive cricketing ties.

“I am doubtful about the series now after all the recent development,” Cricbuzz quoted a top BCB official on condition of anonymity.

“I don't think we will get any response from the other side [as far as the series is concerned] and truth be told, it was supposed to happen by August 28, how many days do we have left?” he asked.

“I don't think so [that the series will proceed as planned]. We tried our best on behalf of the cricket board but this is beyond all of us at this point,” he said.

The official added that until the series is officially called off, “all they can do is hope.”
