Resilient Emerging side battles South Africa to a draw in first four day match
Bangladesh Emerging survived a testing final day against South Africa Emerging in Potchefstroom on Wednesday, with Mahidul Islam Ankon, Aminul Islam Biplob and Nayeem Hasan combining to steer the tourists to safety after an alarming top order collapse threatened to hand the hosts victory.
Resuming their second innings on 15 without loss and needing 396 more runs to win, Bangladesh were reduced to five wickets down for just 70 runs on the fourth day, leaving the match, rather than the target, as the primary concern.
Shahadat Hossain fell in the third over, followed soon after by captain Zakir Hasan, removing both of Bangladesh's Test-experienced batters inside the opening exchanges and piling early pressure on the innings.
Mahfijul Islam added a fighting 41 before departing, while Iftakhar Hossain Ifti and wicketkeeper Chowdhury Mohammad Rizwan both fell without scoring.
With defeat looming, Ankon and Biplob steadied the innings with a 105-run stand for the sixth wicket off 265 balls, ensuring Bangladesh navigated the second session without losing a wicket and giving the side a genuine platform to build resistance from.
The partnership was finally broken early in the third session when Biplob fell for 74 off 174 balls, an innings including 12 fours.
Ankon then combined with Nayeem to see out the remainder of the day, the pair adding an unbeaten 69 for the seventh wicket to carry Bangladesh to safety at 244 for 6.
Ankon finished unbeaten on 48 off 208 balls, having guided Bangladesh through two significant partnerships across the day, while Nayeem remained not out on 49 from just 79 deliveries, striking seven boundaries of his own.
The draw followed a difficult third day for Bangladesh, who had begun on 145 for 3 and were eventually bowled out for 239 in their first innings, with Ankon's fighting 97 off 224 balls, including eight fours and a six, falling agonisingly short of a century.
Iftakhar had earlier added 102 with Ankon before departing for 50, but no other substantial partnership followed, with Bangladesh losing their last seven wickets for just 73 runs.
South Africa Emerging, who had declared their first innings at 519 for 5, built on captain Van Buuren's 171 and an unbeaten 150 from Seletswane, took a commanding 280-run lead before declaring their second innings at 130 for 4, setting Bangladesh their imposing target of 411.
Janco Smit and Schalk Engelbrecht were the pick of South Africa's bowlers in the first innings, taking three wickets apiece, while Iqbal Hossain Emon claimed all three wickets to fall for Bangladesh during South Africa's second innings, including the dismissal of centurion Muhammad Manack's opening partner inside the first seven overs.
The result means the opening four-day match of the series ends level, with the second and final fixture scheduled to begin at Willowmoore Park in Benoni on Sunday.
