Shoriful becomes first in 149 years of Tests to complete historic double
Shoriful Islam etched his name into Test cricket history on his comeback, becoming the first player in the 149 years of the format, to top-score for his side batting at No. 11 and take a five-wicket haul in the same Test on the opening day of the Mackay Test against Australia on Saturday.
The left-arm pacer, who missed the historic Darwin win through injury, top-scored with 14 after coming in at No. 11 during Bangladesh's batting collapse in Mackay.
Bangladesh were bowled out for 64 in their first innings, their fourth-lowest total in Test history, after being asked to bat first.
Shoriful refused to let the innings define the day. He returned with the ball and produced a career-best spell, finishing with 6-35.
He struck twice early, then broke a 77-run stand between Steve Smith and Cameron Green by trapping Smith LBW.
Shoriful then took three wickets in quick succession. He had Beau Webster (0) trapped LBW, had Pat Cummins (0) caught behind off a surprise bouncer, and bowled Mitchell Starc (one) to complete his six-for.
His spell kept Bangladesh alive in the Test despite the batting collapse. Australia closed the opening day on 165-8, leading by 101 runs with two wickets in hand.
Eighteen wickets fell on the opening day, with left-armers Starc and Shoriful accounting for 12 of them between them.
