Smith eats a warning for DRS chatter with Bangladesh players, then falls to Shoriful
Steve Smith was warned by umpires for a second time in the series after another running exchange with Bangladesh players over DRS calls on the opening day of the second Test in Mackay on Saturday.
The incident happened in the second session, when Taskin Ahmed struck Smith's pad, prompting a loud appeal. Umpire Nitin Menon shook his head, but Taskin urged Najmul Hossain Shanto to review it anyway.
As Shanto weighed the call, Smith was heard telling Bangladesh's fielders: "I'm halfway down the wicket to him, it's going miles over." He then added: "Go for it."
Both umpires walked over and warned Smith, who responded with a nod and a puzzled look.
It was the second such exchange involving Smith and Bangladesh's players, after a similar stoush with Das during the first Test.
In Australia's second innings of the Darwin Test, when Bangladesh felt Smith had edged Taijul Islam.
After the not-out call stood, Smith told the fielders: "Use it. Go on. Do it. Go on, use it... Waste another one. Do what you want. Do your thing."
Wicketkeeper Litton Das, who had made a sharp attempt at the catch, replied: "You bat. You just bat." Smith answered: "I'm batting," prompting Das to repeat: "Just bat."
"Na, I'll do what I want," Smith said. "I can do what I want."
Smith carried on batting into the third session, making 42 before getting trapped LBW by Shoriful Islam.
The batter, perplexed by the call, reviewed it, but the decision stayed as umpire’s call.
