Starc’s 6-12 skittles Bangladesh for 64

Mitchell Starc finished with 6-12 as the Australian pace attack rolled over Bangladesh for just 64 in the first innings on Day 1 of the second Test at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay on Saturday.

Starc had claimed five wickets in just 22 deliveries in the first session and returned after lunch to close out the innings, getting number 11 batter Shoriful Islam caught behind for 14 – the highest scorer in the Bangladesh innings.

Pat Cummins claimed three wickets, Josh Hazlewood one as Australia as the hosts wrapped up the tourists in just 34 overs after opting to bowl first.

Bangladesh started the session on 35-6. Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s 51-ball resistance ended in the second over after the break, as he nicked a Pat Cummins delivery for 11 while attempting a drive, with Beau Webster taking a sharp, low catch at slip.

Hazlewood claimed his only wicket of the match in the next over, as Hasan Mahmud hit a ball straight to leg slip after making 10.

Taskin Ahmed tried to pull Cummins for a boundary, only to get caught at square leg by Matt Renshaw for one.

Shoriful and Taijul Islam (11 not out) then added 25 runs for the 10th wicket, Bangladesh’s highest partnership of the innings, to ensure Bangladesh didn’t get rolled over for their lowest Test total – 43 against the West Indies in 2018.

Earlier in the morning session, Starc completed his 19th five-wicket haul in Tests in just 22 balls, dismissing Shadman Islam (0), Tanzid Hasan Tamim (0), Najmul Hossain Shanto (0), Mominul Haque (nine) and Litton Das (0) to have Bangladesh five down for just 12 runs.
