Starc's 10-wicket haul puts Bangladesh on brink of innings defeat

Updated on

Bangladesh went to tea on the second day in Mackay at 91 for 8, still needing 55 runs to avoid an innings defeat, after Mitchell Starc completed a remarkable 10 wicket match haul by bowling Taijul Islam.

The dismissal capped off an outstanding display from the left arm seamer. A hard length delivery angled in on the stumps caught Taijul completely off guard as he attempted to play across the line, crashing into the top of leg stump before he could react.

Taskin Ahmed, unbeaten on 8 alongside Mushfiqur Rahim's watchful 25, took the attack to Nathan Lyon in the final overs before the break, striking a huge six over long on to briefly lift the mood in the Bangladesh camp.

The collapse had gathered pace steadily through the session. Hasan Mahmud fell shortly after lunch, offering no answer to a short ball from Pat Cummins that he could only top edge behind, before Mehidy Hasan Miraz followed soon after, edging Cummins for just one to leave Bangladesh six down.

Litton Das endured a miserable series with the bat, extending his run of scores to three consecutive ducks in the match after edging Starc to Beau Webster at slip without troubling the scorers.

His dismissal left Bangladesh needing 83 runs with five wickets in hand at the time.

Najmul Hossain Shanto had earlier fallen attempting to clear long off against Lyon, picking out Starc at the boundary for 31, ending a watchful partnership with Mushfiqur that had briefly offered Bangladesh some resistance in the morning session.

Bangladesh had gone to lunch on 39 for 3, trailing by 107 runs, with Shanto and Mushfiqur looking to rebuild after Starc struck twice in successive deliveries early in the innings and Tanzid Hasan fell into a short ball trap set by Australia.

Australia all out for 210 as Shoriful claims best ever figures by a Bangladesh pacer

Australia's own innings had been undone a day earlier by Shoriful Islam's career best 7 for 48 with the ball, figures that stand as the best innings return by a Bangladesh bowler overseas in Test cricket, restricting the hosts to 210 all out despite the 146 run first innings lead it still handed them.
