Nigar quits T20I captaincy: Reports

Bangladesh women’s team captain Nigar Sultana is set to step down as T20I captain following the upcoming Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, according to multiple outlets.

Indian-based cricket website Cricbuzz first broke the news, claiming that Nigar has informed the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) of her decision from Japan through a letter on Tuesday.

Nigar, however, wants to continue as the ODI skipper.

The wicketkeeper-batter has been leading the T20I side since 2022. She has led the Tigresses in 80 T20Is – more than all previous captains.

She is Bangladesh’s most successful T20I captain, by number of wins, having led the side to 32 victories.

Bangladesh had recently been eliminated from the semifinal of the Women’s Asia Cup, losing to India by 40 runs in Dubai.

The Tigresses will begin their campaign in the Asian Games with the quarterfinal clash against China on Friday.

Nigar will have the chance to end her captaincy tenure on a high, by winning Bangladesh’s first-ever gold medal in women’s cricket in Asian Games.

Bangladesh have previously won silver in the 2010 and 2014 Games and bronze in 2023.
