Nayeem’s four-wicket haul turns the Mirpur Test and gives Bangladesh a 27-run lead

Updated on:

Nayeem Hasan took four for 33 as West Indies lost their last four wickets for 33 runs after lunch on Friday, folding for 245 and handing Bangladesh a 27-run lead in the Mirpur Test.

West Indies returned from lunch on 212 for six, having added 78 for two wickets in the morning. They managed only 33 more before being bowled out, so in the third day they produced only 111 runs for the loss of six wickets.

Roston Chase played out Miraz’s maiden without taking a single, leaving last man Jayden Seales to face Nayeem. After four dot balls, Seales aimed a slog sweep at a floated length ball and miscued to mid-off, where Miraz held an easy catch.

Nayeem removed Shamar Joseph and Jomel Warrican in the same over, with Najmul Hossain Shanto persisting with the old ball. Joseph under-edged to Litton, giving Nayeem his 50th Test wicket, then Warrican was trapped lbw off the last ball and lost a review.

The milestone made Nayeem the quickest Bangladesh spinner to 50 Test wickets in terms of balls bowled. He finished with four for 33 from 10.5 overs, while Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan Miraz took two each and bowled more than 50 overs between them.

Miraz had earlier ended the cameo of debutant Joshua Bishop. Reprieved on 11 when Mominul Haque dropped him at short leg, he cracked a cover-driven boundary next ball but then missed a low, skidding delivery and was stumped by Litton for 15 from 11 balls.

Mominul suffered the worst of that moment. He lunged to his left, juggled the chance once and landed face first with his helmet striking the ground. The physio rushed on for a concussion check, and Mominul left the field, with a substitute fielder coming on.

West Indies began the session positively, hitting four boundaries in the first 14 balls, three of them from Bishop. Chase later reverse-swept Miraz for four and finished unbeaten on 43 from 60 balls, with five fours, after resuming on 30.

With the pitch starting to break up and assist the spinners, a 27-run lead carries more weight than the number suggests. Bangladesh are batting again after a short break and are yet to score at the end of the first over.
