Bangladesh suffer last-ball heartbreak against India at Hong Kong Sixes
Bangladesh ended the Hong Kong Sixes without a win on Sunday, losing the 11th-place play-off to India off the final ball despite captain Abu Hider Rony’s unbeaten 62 off 18 balls.
India reached 117-1 in their six overs, chasing Bangladesh’s 116-5 at the Mission Road Ground to win the match by nine wickets.
India captain Krunal Pandya won the toss and chose to field. Habibur Rahman Sohan struck two sixes and a four off Kulwant Khejroliya’s first three balls, and Sabbir Rahman added a six as Bangladesh took 24 from the opening over.
Sabbir hit Pandya for six but fell next ball for 13 off four. Mrityunjay Chowdhury, at number three, was out first ball in the same over.
Sohan departed for 18 off six balls. Chowdhury Mohammad Rizwan made 12 off five, leaving Rony to carry the innings.
Rony retired Ahrar Amin Piyan out to keep batting after reaching his fifty. He finished with three fours and eight sixes. Pandya took 2-25 in two overs.
India’s reply was just as aggressive. Shashank Singh and Rahul Tripathi put on 69 for the first wicket before Ahrar bowled Tripathi for 32 off 12 balls.
Shashank then retired after 50 off 15 balls, with one four and seven sixes.
India needed 23 from the last over, with Rahul Tewatia and Nitish Rana at the crease.
Sohan bowled the final over, but Tewatia struck him for a six and back-to-back fours to bring down the equation to nine off three.
He then turned the strike over to Nitish Rana, who also hit him for a six, reducing the equation to two off one.
The Indian batters then ran a two off a fielding error to seal the win.
Pandya was named man of the match.
With the defeat, Bangladesh ended the campaign winless. They had earlier lost to Scotland, Sri Lanka and South Africa – all by one wicket.
