Centurion Jangoo takes West Indies from trouble to control on a day shortened by bad light
Amir Jangoo’s unbeaten century lifted West Indies to 235 for four after 70 overs on Thursday, November 5, as bad light brought an early end to the opening day of the second Test against Bangladesh in Sylhet, following a testing start.
Bad light struck again, just as it did in the Mirpur Test. After a 35-minute delay, only five more overs were possible before the umpires judged conditions unsuitable, and the third session produced just 15 overs in total.
Jangoo raised his second Test century in the third session, advancing down the pitch to Taijul Islam and lofting the spinner over extra cover for six. He kept up his counter-attacking approach throughout, finishing the day unbeaten on 111 from 171 balls.
Justin Greaves partnered him for the unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 77 and was 35 not out at stumps. Bangladesh’s three spinners, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam and Nayeem Hasan, bowled 42 overs without a wicket, while the pacers bowled 14 overs each.
Hasan ended the 131-run stand when a delivery that held its line beat Wickham’s outside edge and hit the stumps. The 23-year-old debutant made 61 off 145 balls with five fours, having resumed the second session on 86 for three with Jangoo.
Bangladesh let several chances go. Jangoo edged one behind that fell just short of Litton Das, Wickham’s edge flew over Shadman at second slip, and on 68 Jangoo miscued a pull to Hasan, who could not hold the return catch.
The early overs belonged to Bangladesh’s pacers. Taskin bowled Brandon King for a duck with an inswinger that hit leg and middle stumps, a contrast to his unbeaten 81 in Mirpur, and Hasan bowled Kavem Hodge for one off 10 balls.
Taskin trapped Joshua Da Silva lbw for 12 to make it 27 for three. Da Silva was opening for the first time in his 35-match Test career, and had survived a dropped catch at second slip by Shadman Islam in the second over.
