Jibon teased a local over marriage to third gender person. Revenge led to his murder in Keraniganj

Four accused were sentenced to death on Wednesday as over a decade old case reaches resolution
Updated on:

A court on Wednesday sentenced four accused to death in the sensational Jibon murder case in Keraniganj which took place back in 2013.

The verdict was delivered by Judge Muhammad Munir Hossain of the 8th Additional District and Sessions Judge’s Court in Dhaka.

The convicts are Md Arman, Md Kawsar, Md Jewel and Md Saiful Islam alias Khalil alias Rajon.

All the accused were absconding when the verdict was delivered.

Court Public Prosecutor (PP) Ashraful Alam confirmed the verdict, saying the judge also fined each convict 1 lakh taka.

If they fail to pay the fines, each will have to serve an additional year of rigorous imprisonment.

The making of a murder

According to the case records, the victim Jibon’s father, Md Alam, and mother,  Shomiron (Chabu Begum), lived in a rented house owned by a man named Sadi in Gandaria of Dhaka.

Meanwhile, the accused Kawsar, Arman, Jewel and Rajon knew one another and lived nearby. They were also all alleged drug addicts.

About a year and a half before the incident, accused Jewel married a third-gender person, Payel.

Jibon and his friends would often mock and ridicule Jewel and his wife.

When Jewel protested, a conflict developed between him and Jibon and his friends.

At Jewel’s instigation, around noon on February 28, 2013, the accused Kawsar and Arman called Jibon to the front of Mojibor Haji’s shop in the Kanapatti area of Muslimnagar.

There, an argument broke out between Jibon and Jewel. At one point Arman grabbed Jibon and held him tightly. Kawsar then punched him in the chest.

Khalil struck Jibon on the head with a heavy, sharp weapon.

When Jibon collapsed to the ground from the blows, the accused held him down.

Jewel and Rajon then cut the veins in Jibon’s hands and legs with a razor or blade.

As people nearby began approaching after hearing Jibon’s screams, the accused fled.

Police investigation and legal proceedings

After receiving the news, Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Abdus Salam of South Keraniganj Police Station quickly reached the scene and rescued Jibon, who was covered in blood and seriously injured.

He was first taken to Mitford Hospital and later, as his condition deteriorated, was being taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital when he gave his name and address before losing consciousness.

After he arrived at Dhaka Medical, the duty doctor declared him dead.

SI Md Abdus Salam filed a murder case against unidentified accused at South Keraniganj Police Station under Sections 302 and 34 of the Penal Code in connection with the incident.

After a lengthy process of recording testimony and examining evidence, the court delivered its verdict.
