Farida Parveen’s legacy remembered on first death anniversary

Channel i is marking the first death anniversary of Lalon singer Farida Parveen today with two special programmes remembering the acclaimed singer’s contribution to Lalon Sangeet in Bangladesh and beyond.

Parveen died on September 13, 2025, at the age of 70 after suffering from kidney complications.

A special magazine programme directed and presented by senior journalist Abdur Rahman will be broadcast at 5:18pm today. The programme will look back at Parveen’s life, career and contribution to Lalon Sangeet.

She will also be remembered on Gaan Diye Shuru, which will air after the 7am news. Renowned flautist Gazi Abdul Hakim will appear on the programme.

Parveen began her musical career in 1968 as a singer with Rajshahi Betar, initially performing Nazrul Sangeet. She came to wider public attention in 1973 through patriotic songs before increasingly turning towards the music of Lalon Shah.

She trained in Lalon Sangeet under spiritual mentor Moksed Ali Shah. Over the years, Lalon’s songs became the defining body of her work, with Parveen developing a distinctive approach to performing the mystic poet’s compositions.

Her contribution extended beyond the concert stage. She established the Ochin Pakhi Sangeet Academy to introduce Lalon Sangeet to younger generations and encourage the study and practice of the tradition.

Parveen received the Ekushey Padak in 1987 for her contribution to music. She also won the Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer in 1993 and received the Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize in 2008.
