Dave Bautista undergoes major transformation for God of War

Updated on:

American actor and retired professional wrestler Dave Bautista has gained 20 pounds of muscle ahead of playing Kratos in Prime Video’s upcoming God of War series, sharing an update on his physical transformation on Instagram.

Bautista posted a video on his Instagram Story with the caption “Gained 20 lbs for GOW” and a “250” sticker, indicating his current weight. He was also wearing a God of War T-shirt in the post.

The Guardians of the Galaxy actor had offered an earlier glimpse of his preparation two months ago, when he said he had resumed weight training but still had time “to get to where I need to be”.

Bautista signed on to play Kratos in August, replacing Ryan Hurst, who was initially cast in the role. Hurst reportedly tore his bicep while filming and required surgery, which would have delayed production into 2027. Bautista’s casting means the production will have to reshoot all scenes featuring Hurst.

Filming for the series began in Vancouver in February. The adaptation will follow the stories of the two most recent God of War video games, focusing on Kratos as he raises his 10-year-old son Atreus, played by Callum Vinson, while facing the gods of the Norse pantheon.

According to the series’ official logline, Kratos and Atreus set out to spread the ashes of Faye, their wife and mother. During the journey, Kratos tries to teach his son how to become a better god, while Atreus attempts to teach his father how to become a better human.

Prime Video has ordered two seasons of the series, which are set to be filmed back-to-back.

Bautista has previously appeared in films including My Spy, Knock at the Cabin and The Wrecking Crew. He is next set to appear in Road House 2 and the Highlander reboot.
