Brazil held by Morocco, Australia stun Turkey

Brazil were denied a winning start, Australia produced a stunning upset and Qatar earned a historic point as the FIFA World Cup delivered early surprises across the tournament on Sunday.

Brazil, aiming for a record sixth World Cup title, had to rely on Vinicius Junior’s equaliser to avoid defeat against a confident Morocco side in Group C at the MetLife Stadium in New York.

Morocco took the lead in the 21st minute when Ismael Saibari finished a well-worked move with a clever scoop. Brazil responded quickly, with Vinicius cutting in from the left before firing a powerful shot to make it 1-1.

Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti admitted his side struggled early in the match. “I think this was a tough match, especially in the beginning,” Ancelotti said after the match.

The Italian coach added that his players were affected by nerves but insisted the team should not lose confidence after the opening game.

The result highlighted Brazil’s need for improvement as they chase their first World Cup trophy since 2002. Despite controlling parts of the game, the South American giants could not find a winning goal.

In another Group C match, Scotland celebrated their return to the World Cup after 28 years with a narrow 1-0 victory over Haiti. John McGinn scored the only goal in the 28th minute.

Scotland manager Steve Clarke praised his players after the victory. “Everyone said it was a must-win game - we won the game,” Clarke said.

Qatar also made history in Group B after securing their first World Cup point with a dramatic late draw against Switzerland. Breel Embolo’s penalty gave Switzerland the lead before Miro Muheim’s own goal levelled the match.

The Asian champions struggled for much of the match as Switzerland dominated possession and created several chances. However, Qatar fought until the end and were rewarded with a late equaliser.

Qatar coach Julen Lopetegui praised his players’ mentality and discipline after the result. “I am very proud of the team,” Lopetegui said.

Australia delivered the biggest shock of the day by defeating Turkey 2-0 in Group D. Coach Tony Popovic’s bold team selection paid off as young goalkeeper Patrick Beach played a key role in the victory.

Popovic left experienced captain Maty Ryan out of the starting line-up and selected Beach, who was making only his third international appearance. The decision proved successful as Beach produced several important saves.

Nestory Irankunda opened the scoring for Australia after receiving a long pass from Paul Okon-Engstler. Connor Metcalfe then sealed the victory with a long-range strike in the 75th minute.

Turkey dominated possession and created opportunities but failed to break down Australia’s organised defence. The defeat was a disappointing start for a side hoping to make a deep run in the tournament.
