Haaland vs Mbappe: Clash of the titans

France and Norway have already secured their places in the Round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup 2026, meaning their showdown at Boston Stadium is a straight shootout to see who will finish top of Group I.

And all eyes will be on Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, who have both made blistering starts to the tournament.

As soon as the World Cup draw took place in December and placed Norway and France together in the same group, football fans began rubbing their hands together at the thought of Haaland and Mbappe squaring off on June 26. Little did they know that both players would touch down in Massachusetts in the form of their lives.

France and Norway made light work of Senegal and Iraq, with the two centre-forwards both scoring twice in each game. It gives the match the feel of a showdown between the two irrepressible strikers.

Different pathways

Haaland and Mbappe have faced each other before at club level but this will be their first meeting on the international stage. The two players have followed quite different paths to get where they are. Haaland, 25, is relishing his first World Cup like a child going to his first theme park.

Mbappe, however, feels right at home in the competition as this is his third World Cup, at the age of 27. Mbappe has an incredible strike rate of 16 goals in 16 World Cup matches, with only Lionel Messi ahead of him on the all-time top scorers’ list.

Mbappe won the World Cup in 2018 and was a runner-up in 2022, while he reached the knockout stages of the 2020 and 2024 editions of the UEFA European Championship.

Haaland, however, is playing at his first major tournament. The Norwegian does possess one major honour that Mbappe still lacks, though, hoisting the UEFA Champions League with Manchester City in 2023.

Despite being two of the world’s top strikers and being renowned for their ability to find the net from anywhere, anyhow, Haaland and Mbappe remain two distinctly different entities.

The Frenchman's speed, his ability to unsettle any team, his unpredictability and his ability to both finish off moves and set them up have made him stand out since he was a teenager.

Yet while Mbappe reigns supreme for his dribbling skills, Haaland is the king of the penalty box. Power, directness, efficiency and a relentless hunger for goals are the Norwegian’s main assets, as is his pace. Their skills may differ, but their statistics tell a similar story, one of two prolific goalscorers who have been racking up records for many years.

Breaking records for fun

Both players lay claim to being their respective countries’ all-time top scorers, with Mbappe scoring 60 international goals compared to Haaland’s 59. The Norwegian can at least take solace in having played far fewer games than his French counterpart, with his 59 goals coming in just 52 matches, compared with Mbappe’s 100 games.

Mbappe has finished as top scorer at club level for the past eight seasons, winning the honour six times in Ligue 1 with Paris Saint-Germain and twice in La Liga with Real Madrid. Meanwhile, Haaland has topped the scoring charts in three of the last four Premier League seasons.

Both players have also been top scorers in the Champions League on two occasions, with Mbappe topping the charts last season with Madrid and in 2023-24 (alongside Harry Kane) when he was still a PSG player.

Haaland led the way in 2020-21 while playing for Borussia Dortmund and on his way to lifting the trophy with City in 2022-23.

The two strikers have met four times at club level, with Mbappe finishing on the winning side on three occasions compared to once for Haaland.

They are both in insatiable form heading into their latest meeting. Mbappe scored 42 goals in all competitions for Madrid last season, with Haaland close behind on 38 strikes for City. The Norwegian has 16 goals in his last eight games for Norway, while Mbappe has struck 10 times in his last 10 outings for Les Bleus.

Battle lines drawn

“He’s an incredible player, one of the best in the world,” Haaland said of Mbappe in 2021. Despite the mutual respect the two players undoubtedly have for one another, they seldom speak about each other.

Since the World Cup kicked off, however, they have exchanged messages through the media.

“I’m not thinking about Haaland at the moment Maybe they’re thinking about us, but I’m focused on Iraq,” Mbappe said before France’s 3-0 victory in their second game.

A few hours later, Haaland responded to a question about France by saying: “Honestly, I don’t have any particular concerns about playing France. They'll probably beat us, and go on to win the tournament.”

But while the two strikers have carefully avoided treading on each other's toes off the pitch, fireworks must be expected when they face off in Boston.
