Iran’s unbeaten World Cup run ends with dramatic elimination

Updated on

Iran’s hopes of reaching the World Cup knockout stage for the first time ended in heartbreaking fashion after Austria’s last-second equaliser on Sunday against Algeria eliminated them from contention.

Amir Ghalenoei’s side finished third in Group G with three points after three draws against Belgium, New Zealand and Egypt.

Iran appeared set to advance when Algeria scored in stoppage time to take a 3-2 lead over Austria, a result that would have pushed them through.

However, Austria responded almost immediately with a dramatic equaliser on the final play of the match, securing a 3-3 draw and sending both teams into the round of 32.

The result left Iran outside the tournament’s eight best third-placed teams by a single spot, ending a campaign where they remained unbeaten.

Their final group match against Egypt had left them waiting on other results after a late winner was ruled out for offside.

Iran captain Mehdi Taremi also missed chances that could have changed their fate, including a first-half penalty and a header that struck the crossbar.

The team’s World Cup journey was complicated by issues away from the pitch, including travel restrictions and visa problems linked to political tensions involving Iran and the United States.

Iran had to commute from their base in Mexico for matches played in the United States, with authorities initially requiring them to arrive shortly before games and leave immediately afterward.

The restrictions were eased before their final group match in Seattle, allowing the squad to arrive two days earlier.

Iran coach Ghalenoei criticised the treatment, saying his players had faced difficult circumstances throughout the tournament.

“We were treated very, very badly,” he said after the draw with Egypt, urging the world to recognise the challenges faced by the team.

Taremi also questioned whether Iran was truly welcome at the tournament, describing the situation as a logistical “disaster”.

Despite the difficulties, Iran expressed gratitude to Mexico and the city of Tijuana after their elimination.

“Leaving Tijuana is truly difficult for all of us,” the team said in a statement.

Iran’s campaign ultimately came down to fine margins, with missed opportunities against Egypt and the late Austrian goal proving decisive.

The defeat extended Iran’s wait for a first appearance in the World Cup knockout stage after seven tournament appearances.
