Fortis beat Muras United to reach AFC Challenge League group stage
Fortis FC wrote a new chapter in their short history by beating Kyrgyzstan's Muras United 1-0 at Bashundhara Kings Arena on Tuesday, a result that sent the Bangladesh Football League club through to the AFC Challenge League group stage in their first ever appearance on the continental stage.
Mohammad Ibrahim scored the only goal of the contest, capping off an unlikely route to qualification. Fortis had finished third in the most recent Bangladesh Football League (BFL) season behind champions Bashundhara Kings and runners up Dhaka Abahani, but with both of those clubs barred from continental competition due to FIFA sanctions, the opportunity fell instead to Fortis and Police FC. While Police were preparing to face Syria's Al Ittihad later the same evening, Fortis had already made full use of their unexpected chance by eliminating Muras on home soil.
The result carried extra significance given Muras United's recent history against Bangladeshi opposition. The Kyrgyz side had beaten Abahani 2-0 at the National Stadium in Paltan during last season's preliminary round, but they found no such success this time, undone by a disciplined Fortis performance backed by a mixture of composure and good fortune.
Fortis started the game with seven foreign players in their line up but struggled to assert control in the opening half. Their best chance came in the 22nd minute when Pa Omar Babou drove into the box from the left and squared up to goalkeeper Kostik, only to see his low left footed effort strike the post and roll away.
The breakthrough eventually arrived seven minutes into the second half. Babou played provider, slipping a through ball for Ibrahim, who controlled it on his right foot before finishing calmly with his left, guiding the ball past Kostik and into the net.
Muras responded with intent, and Fortis goalkeeper Sujan Perera produced two crucial saves to preserve the lead. At the other end, Kostik kept Muras in the contest with a pair of outstanding stops of his own, first tipping away a curling corner from Babu before denying Arik Bista following a low cutback from Ananta Tamang.
The closest Muras came to an equaliser arrived in the 74th minute, when Bista was penalised for handball inside the area. Erbol Atabayev stepped up to take the resulting penalty but saw his effort cannon off the post and away from danger, sparing Fortis at a critical moment.
From there, Fortis saw out the remainder of the match to secure a 1-0 win, sealing what stands as one of the most significant results in the club's history and confirming their place among the group stage sides for this year's AFC Challenge League.
