Fulham walk off as Malaga score into empty net in bizarre ending to a friendly

Fulham's pre-season friendly against Malaga ended in farcical scenes on Wednesday, with the Spaniards scoring a penalty into an empty net as the Cottagers walked down the tunnel.

Malaga levelled deep into normal time when Calvin Bassey was penalised for handball, letting Eneko Jauregi convert to make it 2-2.

Arbeloa, who joined Fulham as their manager in the summer following Marco Silva's departure, was then sent off for arguing with the referee. He left for the tunnel with his players, believing the game had finished.

But Malaga expected a penalty shootout to follow and stayed out on the pitch to contest the Costa del Sol Trophy.

With supporters waiting for the shootout, Jauregi placed the ball on the spot and slotted it into the empty net, celebrating with team-mates at the Estadio La Rosaleda.

Fulham insist both clubs had agreed beforehand that a draw would not be settled by penalties.

"We can confirm that prior to the match, both teams agreed that there would not be a penalty shootout in the event of a draw," the club said on X.

Malaga's website told a different story, claiming a shootout had been scheduled in the contract in case of a draw.

Fulham face Stuttgart on Saturday in their final pre-season fixture.
