Why shouldn’t Bangladesh think about playing in World Cup: Caniggia

Argentine football legend Claudio Caniggia said Bangladesh's dream of qualifying for the World Cup is not out of reach, provided the country invests in coaching, government support and players' mental development.

Diego Maradona's former teammate and 1990 World Cup finalist was in Dhaka on Monday as chief guest at the grand final of the "Dhaka Interschool Champions League 2026," held at Fortis Downtown Resort and Grounds.

"Qualifying for the World Cup is always difficult," Caniggia told reporters. "But I hope Bangladesh can improve the way other teams have over the past 10-20 years."

"The World Cup may soon expand to 62 or 64 teams. Why shouldn't Bangladesh think about playing in it? But that needs government support, good coaching and stronger mental resilience from the players," he added.

Caniggia also stressed the value of Bangladeshi players featuring in Europe's top leagues, citing Leicester City's Hamza Chowdhury.

"Having a player in the English Premier League is fantastic. Playing in Europe's top tournaments helps players gain experience that benefits the whole team," he said.

On Bangladesh's football following, Caniggia said he was not surprised by the passion, noting it dated back to 1986, when Maradona led Argentina to the World Cup trophy. He described local supporters as among the most fervent for any foreign team worldwide.

Asked about a potential role with the Bangladesh national team, Caniggia said he had received no formal offer but would consider one. "Working with a team that wants to move forward is always enjoyable," he said.

On Lionel Messi's chances of playing at the 2030 World Cup, Caniggia expressed doubt, saying it would be difficult, though he called Messi footballing "magic" capable of playing until 41 or 42.

He also addressed Argentina's 2026 World Cup final defeat to Spain, saying Spain were deserving champions and dismissing any suggestion of a FIFA conspiracy.
