Mbappe hat trick helps Real Madrid crush Sociedad in Mourinho's Bernabeu homecoming
Kylian Mbappe struck a brilliant hat trick as Real Madrid eased past Real Sociedad 4-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday, marking Jose Mourinho's first home La Liga fixture in charge of the club since his return to the dugout for a second spell.
The occasion carried extra significance for Mourinho, now in his second spell at the helm, as he took charge of his first home league fixture at the Bernabeu since June 2013.
It marked only his second match back since returning, having overseen a season opening away trip to Espanyol before this game, with Metallica's Enter Sandman blaring around the stadium as he walked out to the touchline for his long awaited return to the ground.
There was another special moment before kick off, as new signing Marc Cucurella paraded a replica World Cup trophy in a guard of honour, with Sociedad captain Mikel Oyarzabal graciously joining him to share in the applause from the home crowd.
Real Madrid started brightly and created several early openings, with Vinicius Junior firing over from the edge of the box inside the opening minutes before combining well with Mbappe, whose tight angled effort was well saved by Alex Remiro shortly afterwards.
The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 40th minute through a moment of individual brilliance.
Federico Valverde glided past two challenges before releasing Mbappe, who controlled superbly and lashed a left footed finish into the top corner to send the Bernabeu into raptures.
Sociedad responded impressively and levelled matters right on the stroke of half time. Ochieng was played through on goal but delayed his shot, only for the loose ball to fall kindly for Luka Sucic, who slotted home coolly to make it 1-1 heading into the interval.
Madrid re emerged for the second half with renewed urgency and restored their lead just after the hour mark through more slick interplay, as Valverde found Mbappe, who exchanged a quick one two with Jude Bellingham before steering the ball into the far corner.
The home side doubled their advantage soon after through a moment of pure quality from Bellingham, who twisted away from his marker on the edge of the box before squaring unselfishly for Vinicius Junior to tap home from close range and make it 3-1.
Real Sociedad pushed men forward in search of a route back into the contest, enjoying spells of possession without seriously troubling Thibaut Courtois, who produced a smart save to deny Turrientes as the visitors searched for a foothold in the closing stages.
Mbappe completed his hat trick in the 80th minute with a moment of real class, as Vinicius Junior threaded the ball through the legs of a defender into his path, allowing the Frenchman to calmly dink the ball over the advancing Remiro and settle the contest.
Madrid continued to press for further goals late on, with substitute Yan Diomande, the club's new record signing, drawing a good save from Remiro after driving into the box, while Valverde also went close with a powerful effort straight at the Sociedad goalkeeper.
There was late drama in stoppage time when Real Madrid thought they had added a fifth, only for Brahim Diaz's close range finish to be ruled out following a VAR review that confirmed Carlos Espi had strayed offside in the build up to the effort.
Bellingham was given a standing ovation as he made way earlier in the second half after registering two assists on the night, while Mourinho was also seen leaping from the bench during a heated moment involving Bellingham and Sucic that went unpunished by the referee.
The victory sees Real Madrid sit top of La Liga after two matchweeks.
Mourinho's side host newly promoted Malaga on 30 August, while Real Sociedad also play at home when they welcome Espanyol on 29 August.
