Chelsea open talks to sign Martinez from Villa

Chelsea have made contact with Emiliano Martinez’s representatives over a potential move for the Aston Villa goalkeeper, with the Argentina international emerging as a target for the Premier League club.

The 33-year-old is reportedly available for transfer after Villa strengthened their goalkeeping options by signing Japan international Zion Suzuki from Parma for about £30 million earlier this month.

Martinez’s possible move to Chelsea comes amid questions over Robert Sanchez’s position as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper. Sanchez endured a difficult start to the Premier League season despite Chelsea beating Fulham 3-2 at Craven Cottage.

The Spain international was beaten at his near post by Josh King before spilling another effort, which allowed Gonzalo Garcia to score.

Chelsea manager Xavi Alonso has continued to back his goalkeeper while leaving open the possibility of changes.

Chelsea’s interest in Martinez could provide another deal between the two clubs, who have developed a close trading relationship in recent years.

Chelsea signed forward Morgan Rogers from Villa for a club-record £117 million, while Alejandro Garnacho moved the other way on an initial loan deal. Villa are also interested in Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson, who is valued at about £65 million and could reunite with former manager Unai Emery.

The clubs were also involved in a deal described as a “PSR swap”, with defender Ian Maatsen joining Villa and Omari Kellyman moving to Chelsea.

Martinez was previously close to joining Juventus this summer, but the move collapsed over concerns about a finger injury. Juventus subsequently signed Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario on loan.

Chelsea could now offer Martinez another opportunity to remain in the Premier League.
